Ivy berries are among the few fruits that ripen in the spring.

Herbaceous dinner tables

Sunflowers are among my favourite flowers. Their sunny faces, which are often covered with bees and other insects, are almost as good as the sunshine itself, and the pleasure continues even when the flowers have faded, as greenfinches and goldfinches flock to feast on the nodding seed heads. Greenfinches are especially amusing to watch as they use their bills like can-openers to rip open the seeds. If the birds allow any of the seeds to ripen, you can then collect them and use them on your bird table during the winter. Teasels, cultivated thistles, poppies, cornflowers and love-in-a-mist are all very attractive to goldfinches, which sway precariously on the stems while digging out the seeds – often long before they are ripe. And you could do worse than cultivate a patch of dandelions and leave some grass to seed for these birds.
